Texas Governor’s Mansion Restoration

Texas Governor’s Mansion Restoration

Built in 1856 near the State Capitol in Austin, the Texas Governor's Mansion is the oldest continuously occupied executive residence west of the Mississippi River.

On June 8, 2008, the Mansion was severely damaged when an arsonist’s incendiary device ignited a devastating fire during a scheduled renovation.

White Construction began the Mansion’s meticulous restoration in 2010, completing the work in just 24 months.

DETAILS

Following emergency stabilization and salvage efforts, the State Preservation Board engaged White Construction and architect Ford, Powell & Carson to restore both the 1856 original structure and the 1914 addition. The project emphasized the reuse of salvaged materials—brick, wood, plaster cornices, and hardware—while integrating modern upgrades. In addition to restoring fire-damaged elements, White Construction completed a 2,500-square-foot rear addition, a new security screening facility, updated utilities, and refreshed landscaping, preserving the integrity of this Texas landmark for generations to come.
